Wow thank you for sharing what you have done. I want to make some gears for my robots. I am curious why you did not use rotary table to make gear. I see that you use Taig lathe spindle with stepper motor. I did not like Sherline gear cutter. I was thinking to make one just like what you have done.

Well, I didn’t use the rotary table because I didn’t have one at that time. The taig headstock plus dovetail cost 69.25, while the Sherline cnc rotary table plus vertical mount cost 395, so it was a cheaper alternative (at least to me). The taig headstock can be rotated in the vertical axis, allowing you to make bevel gears; the “sherline way” requires the tilting angle plate for this, adding 110. Also my setup it’s lighter, easier and faster to prepare (9 vs. 3 screws to mount). The drawbacks are less rigidity and that you can’t mill while the spindle it’s rotating, but for making small gears works great.
